The Queen’s community is a large and diverse one covering those who currently live and work in College, and those who are still associated with it even though they have moved out. This page is to help explain how all these groups fit together under the ‘Queen’s community’ umbrella.
College Council and the Master
The Council, which can be considered to be like a board of directors, appoints the Master of the College who is the Head of the College. The current Master of the College is Professor David Runia.
Vice-Master and Administrative Staff
Working with him is Vice-Master, Dr Philip Mosely, who’s responsible for the day to day running of the College. There’re a number of friendly staff who help the Master and the Vice-Master and you get to know them on a first name basis.
Senior Common Room
While actually being a physical room, the SCR (Senior Common Room) is also a term to describe the somewhat older and more mature of Queen’s residents. The SCR includes mentors, tutors, academics, professionals, some staff and some current students in their final years of study. Visit the Senior Residents page to see the range of people that are in the SCR.
Junior Common Room
The JCR (whilst also being a room) is the group that students from first to third year comprise. There is a great mix of students in the JCR; most are regional however metropolitan, interstate and international students are still abundant.
General Committee
The GC (General Committee) is a group of nine students elected from the JCR by the students. These energetic and respected people run and assist in all matters involving students at the College. From financial issues to social events, the GC are there. They also serve as role models for younger students, and are always available to help with anything that you need. There are also a multitude of committees within the JCR with varying roles including environmental, social work, social activities, music and drama, cultural events, sports and many others.
Wyverns and Alumni
You will also constantly learn of successful people in society who are Wyverns (a friendly term for a past Queen’s resident and members of the alumni, named after the animal on the college crest) and it reminds you that you are a part of an amazing group of people!
