- Summary
- O-Week runs the week before uni starts.
- Introduces you to the College and university.
- Make new friends and settle into College.
Orientation Week is a special week at the start of the year for first year College residents. The purpose is to help you become familiar with university and College life before the second and third year College residents return – it is nothing like the Orientation Week’s you see on US television shows (there is no hazing).

“O-Week is intense and you will be tired at the end but you will also get to know a large base of people before uni even starts. This will an advantage for the first few weeks of classes, when you’re trying to work out what’s going on with your lectures, tutorials and just where to go for your classes. It is great to know that you have a whole bunch of mates to ask for help.

O-Week starts the week before Melbourne uni starts, and before all the other 2nd and 3rd years (seniors) get back to college. This allows all the new residents (‘Freshers’) to meet each other and get established before everyone else arrives. We do things like go to the beach and play silly games in the Quad.
We also do some things that are a little more practical and serious like getting a student from Queen’s, usually someone that does your course, to show you around uni. They will know where all the important stuff is that the people from uni might not show you, like the lecture theatres most of your classes will be in, the closest toilets and good spots to grab some food or coffee.
We also introduce you to Carlton and the city, and don’t worry if you’re going to RMIT – we have students that will show you all the cool stuff there as well.
The bottom line of O-Week is to meet people and have fun and all of the activities are geared towards this. There is no other way you can make so many friends in so short a time and also make the transition to uni life.”
