Summary
The Music and Drama Society organises musical and drama productions, soirees and other performing arts events in College.
There are plenty of opportunities for new and experienced performers, directors, producers, and backstage support crew.

At the forefront of music and drama at Queen’s College is MADS – the Music and Drama Society. MADS reflects one of the best aspects of the College community in that everyone and anyone is encouraged to be involved.

Each year, students who have never performed before take to the stage in a variety of roles and, of course, there is always plenty that needs doing behind the scenes too!

Major Productions

Urinetown

Established in 1914, MADS has a long history of successful productions. Each year the group puts together two shows – this has included a classy revue style show early in the year, the profits from which go to support the production of a larger drama or musical performed in the second half of the year.

These productions often involve over 100 members of the community in areas such as acting, directing, costume/makeup, front of house, sound/lighting and publicity. They are a real showcase of the talent and dedication in the community (see the slideshows for examples).

Recent productions include:

  • Cabaret (2009)
  • The Imaginary Invalid (2008)
  • Urinetown (2007)
  • Cloudstreet (2006)
  • Singin’ In The Rain (2005)
  • Confusions (2004)
  • Into The Woods (2003)
  • Guys and Dolls (2002)
  • In Your Dreams (2001)
  • Other People’s Money (2000)

Soirees and Performing Arts

MADS is also responsible for running other music and drama events around the College. Students are given the opportunity to perform for their peers twice a semester in soirees held in the JCR. These occasions feature a variety of acts – from songs to monologues and even some dancing! They are a fantastic opportunity to show off the talent of the College and anyone is welcome to step up and have a shot in a very supportive environment.

There are also lots of other chances to perform – with the incentive of prizes! These events include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Song and skit writing competitions
  • Public speaking events
  • Debating
  • Performing arts competition

If performing isn’t your thing – don’t worry! There are also literary and art prizes to be claimed too, as well as plenty of opportunities to work behind the scenes doing stuff like sound, lighting, directing, producing and publicity.
