Queen’s provides a supportive, small group environment where students receive individual help and explanations from qualified tutors. Tutorials are informal and respond to the needs of the students rather than re-hashing the formal university tutorials.

Most tutors live on-site and are available to help at any time. In your first year this is a significant bonus – a quick clarification or individual explanation can make all the difference if you are confused or feeling behind at university.

How The Tutorials Work

The tutorial schedule is arranged and rearranged in an effort to accomodate as many students as possible. Tutorials and consultations are held in the evenings so as to avoid clashes with university and other commitments.

Tutorials are tailored to match the needs of the students and the subject matter being taught. Tutors in tutorials aim to explain course fundamentals and core concepts. Tutors in consultations adopt a more question and answer format. Tutorials range between 5 – 8 students per class while consultations are more often conducted on a 1 on 1 basis.

If Queen’s is unable to provide a tutorial in a particular subject, arrangements can often be made at other colleges.

Tutors and College

In addition to being extremely well qualified to tutor their respective subjects, the tutors relate well to the students as they live in college environment and understand the demands of university in conjunction with the social atmosphere that college offers.

Who can attend?

While the tutorial timetable is organised around student and tutor commitments, external students are also welcome to attend classes if they’re staying at another college or going to the University of Melbourne. Visit the Tutorial Program and Timetable page for more information.
