Eakins Hall is the place in Queen’s for dining and socializing. With three meals provided a day, seven days a week, you are never left fending for yourself. Meals tend to be very social occasions and with people chatting to different year levels, courses and backgrounds.
If you’re unlucky enough to have uni over lunch you can make a sandwich at breakfast and take it with you. For those committed to sports training, have late classes or are working, ‘early/late dinners’ can be ordered over the intranet and microwaved when you get back.
At set times each semester, we have ‘black tie’ dinners to celebrate Queen’s achievements or to hear special guest speakers. These are fun nights giving us all a chance to dress up, listen to insightful speakers, take gorgeous photos with your friends and enjoy an elegant meal.
Some examples of guest speakers we have had at these dinners include:
- The Honourable John Brumby (Victorian Premier)
- Tim Anderson and Paul Wiegard (CEO and MD of Madman Entertainment – leading Anime distributor in Australia. They are also Wyverns.)
If you are after a casual job, Eakins employs students to help setup, serve meals and cleanup afterwards. The Catering Manager is very understanding of your university commitments and is very flexible with shifts.
Meal Descriptions
Curious what breakfast, lunch, dinner and brunch are like? View the descriptions below to find out when the meal times are and what sort of food is served for each type.
Breakfast
7.30am to 10.30am
Most days breakfast is continental with plenty of cereals, toasts, yoghurts and fruits to choose from. A couple of times a week, there is a hot food option which is popular.
Lunch
Noon to 1.30pm
The sandwich presses are on full time to toast the sandwhich/roll/foccacia extravaganzas created by students from the range of salad, meat, cheese and antipasto. There is also often hot food such as tacos, baked potatoes, pies or fish and chips as well as fresh fruit.
Dinner
6.30pm (Mon-Wed), 6pm (Thu-Sun)
As there is an emphasis on community at Queen’s, dinners on Monday to Wednesday are ‘formal’ which means you wear an academic gown over your normal clothes. The entire College (students, Master, Vice-Master, tutors and some staff) attends and the meals are served to the tables.
Dinners on the other nights of the week are cafeteria style and more casual.
Brunch
On the weekends is everyone’s favorite meal – brunch. Brunch is a gradual progression of courses (depending when you wake up) throughout the morning starting with cereal, passing through eggs and bacon and ending with a variety of hot finger foods, salads and sandwiches.
It is a great time to socialise and some people have been known to spend the entire morning at brunch catching up on College gossip and fighting for the best sections of the demolished newspapers that are strewn across the tables.
