- Summary
- These are awarded to undergraduate students who are already resident at the College or to students entering the College at a second year level or higher. They are awarded on the basis of results obtained in the annual University examinations.
In total about twenty-four major and minor scholarships will be awarded. Major scholarships are 15% of annual fees, minor scholarships are 10% of annual fees. Details of some scholarships are given below. The majority of continuation scholarships do not need to be applied for. If particular scholarships do need to be applied for in writing, this will be indicated for that scholarship.
- Os Nelson Scholar (Half Fee, Financial Need, Country)
Two half-fee scholarships for continuing students have been made available through the generosity of Mr Mark Nelson in honour of his father Mr Os Nelson, who resided at the College in 1950 to 1952. They must be applied for in writing and applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need.
- T E Moran (Major)
Two scholarships are available, the T. E. Moran scholarship for a student in any field of study, and the F. H. Moran scholarship specifically for a medical student. They were made available through a generous benefaction on the part of Mr T. E. Moran, who was the founder, together with Mr F. J. Cato, of the firm Moran & Cato. His son, Dr F. H. Moran was a medical practitioner.
- Tweddle (Major)
J. T. Tweddle was a major benefactor of the College in the 1920’s and 1930’s. A part of the Main building of Queen’s is still named after him. A successful businessman and prominent Methodist, he was President of Council from 1934 to 1939.
- Lilford (Major)
Two scholarships are available, both for students in the medical and health science fields of study. The one is the Algernon George Rowley Lilford scholarship, in honour a student who graduated in medicine from Queen’s in 1916, but was so badly injured in World War I in France that he was unable to take up his profession. The William and Elizabeth Lilford scholarship is in honour of his parents.
- Johnstone-Need (Major)
Dr. Walter Johnstone-Need resided at Queen’s from 1926 to 1931. On completing his studies he pursued a distinguished career as a surgeon in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology. On his retirement he made two generous donations allowing scholarships to be given in his name. They can be awarded to any student, but are usually given to students in the medical or health sciences area. The support of the scholarship fund is being continued by his widow, Mrs. Muriel Johnstone-Need.
- Ohman-Sutton (Major)
Dr Ohman, who entered College in 1921, was a vet in Western Australia. On his death in 1987, he left a bequest to provide for a scholarship for students studying Veterinary Science, in memory of himself and his sister.
- Robert McKeeman Oakley (Minor)
Robert McKeeman Oakley was one of the first employees of the Commonwealth Department of Shipping when it was formed in 1901. He rose to become the first Chairman of the Tariff Board. He was a Methodist layman and left in his will a sum, the income of which was to provide a scholarship or bursary at Queen’s College.
- Norman M Harry (Minor)
This scholarship commemorates a distinguished surgeon, who studied at Queen’s from 1926 to 1931 and for many years was a medical tutor at the College, as well as a member of Council.
- R A Langton (Minor)
This scholarship was made available in 1977 through a bequest from the estate of R. A. Langton, who expressed the wish that so far as possible the scholarship be used to benefit country students who desire to take up residence at the College while attending the University of Melbourne. Mr Langton was the father of R. L. Langton, who entered the College in 1956 to study Law.
- Past Scholars (Minor)
Scholarships from this fund are made possible by gifts given annually to the College by past scholars, i.e. former residents who were awarded scholarships during their time at Queen’s.
- Callister (Minor)
This scholarship is funded by a bequest from Dr. C. P. Callister in memory of his son Ian, who was killed in the Second World War. The scholarship is designated for a second year student or higher.
- Dr Winston Rickards (Minor)
Awarded to a continuing student showing academic and professional potential in the field of medicine or the health sciences.Awarded to a continuing student showing academic and professional potential in the field of medicine or the health sciences.
- Caldwell languages (Minor)
The scholarship is in memory of William Douglas Craig Caldwell (Arts, 1962), who died in 1988. Students studying a European language at third year level or higher are eligible for this scholarship, first preference being given to a student studying German. Qualified applicants can apply in writing to the Master.
- Parnaby scholarship (Minor)
General continuation scholarships for students who have made an excellent contribution to College life and wish to continue their residence at the College. This scholarship must be applied for in writing. In the letter of application financial circumstances must be explained.
- The Hurley Medical scholarship (Quarter Fees)
The scholarship in honour of Dr. Leslie Hurley is to be awarded for outstanding merit to either (1) a final-year medical student studying at the University of Melbourne or (2) a medical graduate of not more than five years standing who has been a resident at Queen’s and wishes to do post-graduate medical work either in Australia or overseas. The value of the scholarship is $2500 for category (1) and $5000 for category (2). Qualified applicants can apply in writing to the Master.
- Graduate Theology Hague (Quarter Fees)
This scholarship was founded in 1910 when the late Mr. George Hague, a Methodist merchant from Geelong, made the College the residuary legatee of his estate. It is available for a theological student resident in the College who is training for the ministry. Qualified applicants can apply in writing to the Master.
